Shauna Bannon | IMMAF World Silver Medalist | No Shame Podcast #102

World championship silver medalist, Shauna Bannon joins us in the studio for episode #102 of Paddy Holohan's No Shame Podcast. Shauna, a multiple kickboxing world champion, made the leap to MMA just 15 months ago when she joined the ranks at SBG D24. Since then she has been learning everyday under the guidance of Coach Paddy Holohan & last week's IMMAF-WMMAA championships in Bahrain was a measure of how far Bannon has come in such a short space of time.

Shauna discusses her kickboxing background, the large success she experienced on the world stage & why she felt it was time to make the switch to MMA. Bannon who originally joined SBG D24 to take up BJJ, eventually began to change her preconceived perception of MMA & slowly fell in love with the sport. Both Paddy & Shauna discuss some of the people at SBG D24 & how courses such as the 'Before Beginners program' have helped to build a community, creating a special atmosphere in the gym.

Shauna was coached by Paddy throughout the championships in Bahrain & she offers a breakdown of how the tournament went, with a gruelling 4 fight schedule over the course of 6 days. An opening UD win against Italy's Yessica Ortega, was followed up by an impressive display against the Czech Republic's Gabriela Horakova. Her scheduled semi-final bout against Bahrain's Brena Soares Cardozo was postponed due to the fact Bannon's opponent had previously competed in professional MMA resulting in a forfeit, advancing Shauna to the final against China's Guangmei Han.

Unfortunately the final didn't go Shauna's way, with large spells spent on the defensive but she more than held her own against a much bigger opponent taking the fight back to feet several times in search of a stoppage. Paddy explains how she very nearly finished the fight at the end of the second round, only for the fight to be brought back to feet after Bannon gripped the cage fence. Despite some initial disappointment Bannon acknowledges the magnitude of her achievement & places it into context when talking about her future plans.

The tournament also saw SBG D24 Coach Gary Rooney secure a bronze in the Junior section with team Ireland taking home an impressive 6 medals marking a successful weak for head coach Andy Ryan.

Paddy also addresses the lack of funding from the government following Sunday's announcement by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to award over half a million investment to several west Dublin Club's across multiple sports, none of which are MMA.

Shauna hopes to one day emulate her coach by scaling the top summits of the game. Bannon is looking to lineup as many fights as possible in 2020 with a view to turning pro. Her ultimate dream is to one day become UFC Champion.
